Tom Horne, John Huppenthal, et al.—officials who opposed TUSD’s Mexican-American studies curriculum, are proponents of the idea that, by fighting the Mexican War, America may have spread the notions of racial supremacy and territorial expansion along with the blessings of liberty and democracy. They embrace what the New York Herald printed in 1847: “The universal Yankee nation can regenerate and disenthrall the people of Mexico.
